Cambodia and Thailand Jointly Construct First Border Bridge

The governments of Cambodia and Thailand have jointly constructed the first border bridge between the two nations in Banteay Meanchey with the official inauguration taking place on 22 April 2019 by the heads of government of both countries.

According to a post on Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s Facebook page, the Government of Thailand has provided an estimated US$$19 million grant for the construction of the Stung Bot-Ban Nong Ing Friendship Bridge, while the Royal Government of Cambodia has contributed to the expenses on mine clearance, taxes, and tariffs.

“This bridge is the first big bridge built on the Cambodian-Thai border between the border markers number 50 and 51,” Samdech wrote, “constructing this bridge is the opening of a new historical page between the two countries aiming to improve cross border trade between Cambodia and Thailand”.

Built by Royal Thai Army (RTA) engineers, the bridge is 620 metres long and 17 metres wide, with 215 metres on the Thai side, and 405 metres on the Cambodian side. The heads of the two governments also attached the last concrete section connecting the ‘Cambodia-Thai Friendship Bridge’.
