Cambodia Unveils Visionary Master Plan to Transform Chrey Thom into Strategic Trade Gateway

New international border infrastructure in Kandal province set to modernize customs operations and accelerate economic integration with Vietnam

The Royal Government of Cambodia has initiated a comprehensive master plan to overhaul the Chrey Thom International Border Gate, a move designed to cement its status as a premier economic hub on the southern trade corridor. During a high level inter-ministerial meeting on January 8, 2026, senior officials from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Interior, and the Ministry of Land Management gathered to finalize the design of new headquarters and supporting facilities in Sampov Poun city, Kandal province. Led by Secretary of State Hean Sahib, the committee reviewed detailed architectural layouts that prioritize efficiency, security, and the seamless flow of cross border commerce.

The proposed master plan includes state of the art office buildings for competent authorities, designated cargo transfer zones, and specialized customs units tailored for high volume traffic. Strategically, the new complex will mirror the successful joint inspection models used at other major international checkpoints, integrating modern landscaping and public spaces to improve the overall environment for travelers and businesses alike. This modernization is a direct response to the explosive growth in Cambodia Vietnam trade, which reached approximately 10.4 billion dollars in the first eleven months of 2025 and is projected to surpass 12 billion dollars by the start of 2026.

The transformation of Chrey Thom from a quiet riverside town into a buzzing construction zone is centered around the landmark Chrey Thom-Long Binh Friendship Bridge, which opened in 2017. As the shortest route connecting Phnom Penh to the Vietnamese border, this crossing has already attracted significant investment in retail, hospitality, and logistics. Government officials envision the area evolving into a major population hub and eventually a fully developed city, supported by ongoing road upgrades on National Road 21 and the potential establishment of a dedicated Special Economic Zone.

Beyond trade, the development aims to deepen social and cultural ties by simplifying formalities for cross border mobility and tourism. By reducing logistics costs and diversifying export routes, the Chrey Thom gateway provides a vital alternative for Cambodian manufacturers, shielding the national economy from disruptions elsewhere. Once the final master plan receives approval from the top government leadership, construction is expected to begin rapidly, signaling Cambodia’s unwavering commitment to regional connectivity and sustainable economic growth.
