Cambodia Announces Plans for Four New International Border Crossings with Vietnam

In a significant step towards enhancing regional connectivity, the Royal Government of Cambodia, via the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, has convened a meeting to discuss the construction of four new international border crossings along its border with Vietnam. This decision, announced on August 19, 2025, aims to facilitate not only transportation but also trade and tourism, strengthening ties between the two nations.

Ms. Im Nithara, Secretary of State for the Ministry of Public Works, revealed that the proposed crossings will be strategically located in the provinces of Takeo, Kratie, Ratanakiri, and Tbong Khmum. During the meeting, stakeholders engaged in thorough discussions about the project’s location, feasibility studies, and necessary land acquisition measures.

A key aspect of the initiative involves preparing detailed engineering designs (DEDs) to ensure a streamlined implementation process for the Border Crossing Infrastructure Connectivity Project. This preparation phase aims to keep the project on track and progressing smoothly.

The project will receive cooperative financing from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), which is expected to bolster the transport sector significantly. These developments are anticipated to improve the flow of transportation and trade not only in Northeast Cambodia but also across its borders.

In addition to facilitating local and international movement, the initiative aligns with broader regional cooperation efforts, including the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) and Cambodia-Vietnam bilateral relations. It also supports the Northeast Development Master Plan, aimed at establishing Economic Pole 5, and is part of the first phase of the Pentagon Strategy of the Royal Government of Cambodia.

As Cambodia continues to invest in its infrastructure, these new border crossings promise to enhance economic connectivity, paving the way for growth in the transport and tourism sectors while fostering deeper ties with Vietnam and beyond.
