Advancing Sustainable Transport: Cambodia’s Vision for Economic Resilience and Regional Integration

Cambodia highlights infrastructure progress under Pentagonal Strategy–Phase I, emphasizing multi-modal transport development, reduced logistics costs, and smart digital systems

Beijing: Advancing sustainable transport systems and embracing digital innovation have become essential drivers for reinforcing economic resilience, facilitating international trade, and deepening regional integration. On the morning of September 22, 2026, during the Global Sustainable Transport Forum 2026 in Beijing, Cambodian Minister of Public Works and Transport Peng Ponea delivered a keynote address at the forum’s plenary session. Co-chaired by Vice Minister of Transport of the People’s Republic of China Li Yang, the plenary convened ministers, deputy ministers, and high-level delegates from 28 nations, alongside leaders from international development agencies and the private sector.

Addressing the plenary, Minister Peng Ponea underscored that sustainable transport serves as an indispensable foundation for long-term economic stability, regional cohesion, and sustainable development. He briefed international delegates that within Cambodia, developing modern, eco-friendly transport infrastructure represents a top national priority under Phase I of the Royal Government’s Pentagonal Strategy. To realize this vision, Cambodia is actively constructing and upgrading multi-modal networks, including roads, expressways, railways, maritime ports, airports, inland waterways, logistics hubs, and urban transit systems. The core objective of these investments is to enhance connectivity, lower logistics costs, streamline cross-border trade, improve traffic safety, and expand economic opportunities for citizens and businesses alike.

Beyond physical infrastructure, Minister Peng Ponea highlighted the transformative role of technology and innovation in modernizing the transport sector. Cambodia is currently accelerating the rollout of digital public services and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to make transit services more efficient and accessible. The 2026 forum, held under the theme “Sustainable Transport: Easier Movement of People and Smoother Flow of Goods,” provided a timely platform to align global transport strategies with digital transition goals.

Minister Peng Ponea’s keynote presentation in Beijing demonstrates Cambodia’s commitment to building an integrated, tech-driven transport network. By balancing physical infrastructure construction with digital governance and intelligent transit, Cambodia is not only reducing domestic trade barriers and logistics costs but also positioning itself as an active contributor to sustainable global supply chains.
