Cambodia’s Agriculture Sector Set to Boost GDP Significantly by 2024

In a promising outlook for the Cambodian economy, the agriculture sector is projected to contribute nearly 17% to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) by 2024, amounting to an impressive USD 7.82 billion. This information was unveiled in a recent press release following a meeting of the National Assembly and Senate on agriculture held on 4 May 2025.

According to the release, the agricultural sector’s contribution to GDP is anticipated to increase steadily, rising from approximately 19,805 billion riels (about USD 4.95 billion) in 2015 to 24,282 billion riels (around USD 6.07 billion) in 2020, ultimately reaching 31,292 billion riels (USD 7.82 billion) by 2024.

The breakdown of contributions from various sub-sectors highlights the diverse nature of Cambodia’s agriculture: crops constitute 61.3%, followed by animal production at 15.4%, fisheries at 20%, and forestry at 3.3%.

During the Senate and National Assembly discussions, Prime Minister Hun Manet highlighted the Royal Government of Cambodia’s commitment to enhancing agricultural development. He announced a special budget package of USD 35 million aimed at providing low-interest loans to modern agricultural communities over the next three years. This initiative is expected to further propel the growth of Cambodia’s agricultural sector, supporting farmers and promoting sustainable practices.

As Cambodia looks to the future, the government’s strategic investments signal a robust commitment to strengthening its agricultural base, ensuring food security, and boosting the nation’s economy.
