Cambodia’s First Skytrain Ready for Sea Games 2023

The role model of sky train oversea

Construction on Cambodia’s first ever sky train, running from Central Market to Phnom Penh International Airport, is expected to start soon after the feasibility study by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) with the expectation that it will be operational before the SEA Games 2023, according to an official from the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation.

“The train project is currently is under study by JICA, which will take one or two-years to be completed. This project is going ahead without cancellation”, Va Simsorya, spokesman for the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation, told Construction and Property Magazine, echoing the earlier comments by H.E. Sun Chanthol, Minister of Public Works and Transport to an online news portal. The Minister made the comments to offset rumours that the project has been canceled due to a lack of financial assistance.

The governments of Cambodia and Japan have already met twice to discuss the plan and will call another meeting this month to study the construction in detail, according to H.E. Sun Chanthol.

The sky train will be 18 kilometres long and be constructed with Japan development aid of between USD800 million and USD1 billion, said Mr. Simsorya, adding that after the completion of the project study, the groundbreaking will begin immediately and the infrastructure project is expected to be complete before the SEA Games 2023, when Cambodia hosts the regional sports event.
