Cambodia’s Mining Sector Sees Significant Revenue Growth in 2024

In a notable achievement for Cambodia, the Ministry of Mines and Energy reported nearly USD 100 million in non-tax revenue from the mining sector in 2024, reflecting an impressive increase of approximately 79% compared to the previous year. This growth highlights the country’s expanding mining activities, which now include numerous sites dedicated to both domestic use and export.

During the official inauguration of a cement factory in Oral District, Kampong Speu province, on May 20, 2024, His Excellency Keo Rattanak, Minister of Mines and Energy, shared these remarkable figures. He noted that Kampong Speu province alone contributed around USD 5 million in non-tax revenue in 2024, alongside approximately USD 1 million generated in the first quarter of 2025. This boost from the mining sector has provided employment opportunities for about 1,600 residents across 76 mining sites in the province.

Looking ahead, the Ministry of Mines and Energy is actively assessing requests to use the mining fund to support the implementation of nine new projects, with an anticipated budget exceeding USD 1 million.

Prime Minister Hun Manet weighed in on the significance of local mining, emphasizing that every country benefits from developing its own mineral resources. He pointed out that local mining not only reduces costs associated with imports but also contributes nearly 100 million USD in tax revenue for the state in 2024. Furthermore, it creates additional job opportunities for the populace.

The Prime Minister has also instructed the Ministry of Mines to prioritize the identification of potential mining areas and mineral resources while ensuring that these activities do not disrupt local communities.

With these developments, Cambodia continues to position itself as a growing player in the mining industry, aiming for sustainable growth that benefits both the economy and its citizens.
