Cambodia’s Railway to Become Part of Asean Rail Network

Cambodian people and tourists will be able to travel by rail from Cambodia to Malaysia and Singapore after Cambodia completely connects its western rail track to Thailand in late April. The connection will allow Cambodia’s railway to become a part of the ASEAN region rail network.
The Ministry of Public Works and Transportation announced that the connection of Cambodia’s western rail line with Thailand is set to be inaugurated on 22 April with a signing ceremony of the agreement on joint work along the track between the two countries.
After signing the agreement, the link will be available for people, tourists, and goods to move from Cambodia via rail from Phnom Penh and from Preah Sihanoukville to Bangkok city in Thailand, said H.E Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transportation.
Connecting the rail track with Thailand will allow Cambodia’s railway network to link with the regional railway network in ASEAN, allowing travel by track from Cambodia to Malaysia and Singapore through Thailand, Mr Chanthol said.
“From Phnom Penh or from Preah Sihanoukville to stop at this station [Poi Pet station] and then continue to Bangkok. From Bangkok, it is available for tourists who want to travel by track to Malaysia and Singapore,” Mr Chanthol said.
The agreement on joint work along track will be inked on the same day of the official inauguration of the rail connection between Cambodia and Thailand.
By connecting with Thailand’s rail line, Cambodia will be able to transport agricultural products and goods to China through Thailand and Laos as the Chinese government is planning to build a rail track from Yunnan province to Laos and Thailand.
