Chinese Company Eyes Expansion of SEZ Investments Upon Completion of the New Takhmao Techo Airport

Shanghai Geoharbour Group has announced plans to broaden its investment portfolio in Cambodia, with a focus on developing additional special economic zones (SEZs) alongside constructing the Takhmao Techo International Airport. The initiative was discussed in a meeting on 21 October 2024, where the company’s delegation met with HE Sun Chanthol, the Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, to outline their ambitions for expanding their infrastructure investments in the country.

The Shanghai Geoharbour Group, a company with an impressive track record of over 200 major projects throughout Asia—including ports, airports, and artificial islands—is already actively involved in the Takhmao Techo International Airport project, which is nearing completion. The delegation expressed their interest in pursuing further investment opportunities within Cambodia’s SEZs, focusing on infrastructure development.

In response, the deputy prime minister highlighted ongoing projects such as the Funan Techo Expressway and the Port Expressway, representing lucrative investment prospects for local and international investors, including the Shanghai Geoharbour Group.

The surge in interest from Chinese investors in Cambodia’s SEZs is evident, with other companies also showing considerable enthusiasm for these development opportunities. For instance, China’s Wanli Stone is evaluating the potential to establish a new SEZ while currently managing a thriving marble and granite business in Kampong Speu province.(Read more)

Similarly, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Chaosan recently unveiled plans to develop a 32-hectare SEZ in Bati District, Takeo Province, to boost local employment.(Read more)

Furthermore, Golden Port SEZ Development Co., Ltd. is preparing to launch a substantial SEZ project covering approximately 270 hectares along the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway in Sihanoukville. (Read more)
