China Spearheads Global 5G with 2.84m Base Stations, Zhejiang Alone has Over 220,000

In a remarkable stride towards technological advancement, Zhejiang province, renowned as an e-commerce hub in East China, has proudly announced the establishment of an extensive network comprising more than 220,000 5G base stations. This revelation was made by Li Min, Deputy Director of the Provincial Economy and Information Technology Department, during the 2023 Yangtze River Delta 5G+ Industrial Internet Conference held in Shaoxing city, Zhejiang, posted by World Internet Conference on 5 December 2023.

The province’s commitment to cutting-edge connectivity is evident, with a remarkable statistic: every 10,000 residents in Zhejiang now share access to over 33 5G base stations. This robust infrastructure paves the way for a new era of connectivity and innovation, positioning Zhejiang at the forefront of China’s digital transformation.

Moreover, Zhejiang has fostered 653 provincial-level “future factories” and intelligent manufacturing units, complemented by the establishment of 535 provincial-level industrial internet platforms. These initiatives underscore Zhejiang’s dedication to not only technological advancement but also the integration of smart technologies into industrial processes.

China, spearheading global 5G development, has reached a milestone with a total of 2.84 million 5G base stations by May 2023, solidifying its position as a pioneer in building the world’s most extensive and advanced network infrastructure. Zhejiang’s substantial contribution to this progress reinforces its role as a trailblazer in shaping the digital landscape of the future.

A 5G base station is the core equipment of a 5G network, providing wireless coverage and enabling wireless signal transmission between wired communication networks and wireless terminals. The 5G base station, also known as gNB, is a stationary transceiver that serves as the primary hub for wireless device communication. It links the devices to other devices or networks using fibre optic cables or dedicated high-bandwidth wires.

The societal, economic, and cultural implications of this technological advancement are monumental. The accelerated pace and enhanced efficiency of data transmission empower a spectrum of applications that touch every aspect of people’s lives. From revolutionising industries and economies to shaping cultural experiences, the impact of 5G technology resonates across diverse facets of society to be a transformative digital society.
