Chinese-funded Morodok Techo Stadium 50% Completed

The sound of fireworks echoed across the new satellite city of Prek Tasek, Khan Russey Keo, Phnom Penh to celebrate the completion of the main structures of the mega Morodok Techo National Stadium, a building symbolising the strength of Cambodia-China relations.

Stretching over 82,400 square metres of construction area, the Morodok Techo National Stadium was 50% completed on 12 May 2019, following 20 months of extensive construction work.

Speaking at the celebration event of the structural completion, H.E Thong Khon, head of the technical working group for the project and Minister of Tourism, said that the progress of the stadium is about 50% completed with the remaining work scheduled to be completed by the end of 2020.

Throughout the 20 months of extensive construction work led by China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), H.E Thong Khon said that the working team has accomplished the following tasks: 1) installation of concrete spectator seating is 70% completed, 2) construction material used for the main structure is 100% imported with only installation equipment remaining and 3) about 540 Chinese workers and 300 local workers joined the construction.

In addition, in July, the installation of concrete spectator seating will be completed and in August, the structure of the both prows of the shape of a sailing ship (a design that represent Khmer Sampeah or way to greet) will be completed.

This stadium is a gift from the People’s Republic of China worth about US$160 million and is being built on a total area of 16.22 hectares. Built to serve as a venue for the 32nd SEA Games in 2023, the stadium can accommodate up to 60,000 visitors. (Read more)
