Completion Date of Kampot Tourism Port Postponed Again, says MPWT Spokesman

After many delays since late 2020, the completion date of the US$8 million Kampot tourism port that was set for late this year could be delayed once again due to shortages of labour and construction materials caused by the COVID-19 crisis.

Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) spokesman HE Vasim Sorya said that a working team from the ministry in charge of the project has inspected the progress of construction earlier this week, but he has yet to receive the report on the inspection.

“In the context of COVID-19, the construction progress was interrupted, the number of workers has been reduced, so the completion of the project may be delayed,” said HE Vasim Sorya.

Based on the estimated data, the construction of this port to date is only about 75% complete, which is far behind the schedule.

However, June has passed but the project is not completed yet. The new deadline is set for late 2021, but it could be delayed further.

Located in Toek Chhu district, the ground was broken on the project in August 2018 and is being built under a US$8 million loan from the Asia Development Bank (ABD). (Read more)

Once operational, the 300-metre-long port will allow the docking of tourism vessels, which can carry up to 300 to 400 passengers.

The Kampot international tourism seaport will be the main gateway connecting tourism vessels from Thailand and Vietnam to Cambodia’s Kampot province.
