Construction Begins for Japanese-Funded US$27 million Choeung Ek Wastewater Treatment Plant

The construction of the Japanese-funded US$27-million sewage system and a large-scale treatment plant in Choeung Ek officially began in late May and is scheduled for completion in November 2023.

According to an announcement by the Phnom Penh Municipality yesterday, the implementation of the project is divided into 4 stages, including:

1. Filling up 3 hectares of land in Chak Angre Leu commune as pre-construction work

2. Constructing the Choeung Ek wastewater treatment plant with a capacity to treat up to 5,000 cubic metres of water per day

3. Installation of wastewater pumps into the drainage system of the Boeung Trabek pumping station

4. Building a small road for system maintenance purposes (1.7km long and 10m wide), installing a steel drainage pipe system (0.30m wide and 1.84m long), and building a sewage pumping system connected to the treatment station

The project is being implemented by a private Japanese company Kubota Metawater Joint Venture, which won a tender in April. (Read more)

Phnom Penh Governor HE Khuong Sreng said that this project will help improve the water quality, sanitation and environment of the southern part of Phnom Penh, especially around the Choeung Ek Lake.
