Deputy Prime Minister demands single standard for new road construction in Sihanoukville

Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Ministry of Land Management Urban Planning and Construction (MLMUPC) H.E Chea Sophara has instructed the contractor for road construction in Sihanoukville to ensure a single standard of construction for the road building in the province.

The instruction came as the construction contract for 34 roads in Sihanoukville using a US$100 million budget is set to be signed in November with construction starting soon after. (Read more)

During a meeting held on 25 October, H.E Chea Sophara discussed several points, such as the budget to be used for road construction, the type of road to be built, the drainage system, and the single standard for every road.

H.E Chea Sophara also advised contractors to arrange accommodation for workers on the construction site to facilitate the work.

The road construction will be divided into three types: new roads, existing roads and mountainous roads which the road construction company must build in accordance to the technical standards of each type of road.

H.E Chea Sophara suggested that the selected contractor may remove any tree if it is necessary for the road construction. Any removed trees can be replanted after completion, whereas trees growing on sidewalks that do not affect road construction should not be removed.

For the construction of the new roads, H.E Chea Sophara instructed the contractors to ensure new foundations are installed in accordance to correct technical standards to ensure that all the roads are durable.

The construction of the roads will focus on technical infrastructure issues like construction quality, road size, cable installation, telecom networks, clean water pipes, and wastewater and drainage systems. (Read more)
