Work on 140-megawatt solar power stations continues as planned

Four solar projects with a total generation capacity of 140 MW and total investment costs of around US$132.5 million are on course as planned although other mega power projects have seen construction suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The four solar projects were approved by the government in 2019. As planned, construction is scheduled to be completed before the end of 2020. Those plants are:
1. Green Sustainable Ventures Co Ltd invested US$17.5 million on a 20-megawatt solar project in Bavet town in Svay Rieng province.
2. Ray Power Supply Co Ltd invested US$28.8 million on a 30-megawatt solar project in the Sereysophon district in Banteay Meanchey province.
3. Risen Energy Co Ltd invested US$57.2 million on a 60-megawatt solar farm in Thmor Kol district in Battambang province.
4. Schneider Infinite Co Ltd invested US$29 million on a 30-megawatt solar plant in Krakor district in Pursat province.

Victor Jona, a spokesman at the Ministry of Mines and Energy, said on Wednesday that construction processes on the projects continue smoothly and have not been impacted by the outbreak of the coronavirus.

“Because the solar plants are normally on a small scale, they are easy to be installed and have not been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic unlike other energy projects especially those of million-dollar investments,” said Mr Jona.

A 400 MW power plant, located in Lavea Em district, Kandal province, which was scheduled to generate power for the grid in the first semester this year, has seen construction suspended due to contracted construction firms from China being impacted by COVID-19.

Meanwhile, two coal-fired power plants, one with a generation capacity of 700 megawatts in Koh Kong province and another with a 265 megawatt capacity in Oddor Meanchey province, were expected to be reconvened by the Senate on 2 April after the National Assembly approved the draft provision of a state guarantee on 30 March.
