SHV’s New 253-Metre Container Port Inaugurated with Japanese Aid

A new 253-metre-long container terminal at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port was officially inaugurated on 12 September 2024, marking a significant expansion for Cambodia’s primary port. Attended by PM Samdech Hun Manet, the ceremony highlighted the terminal’s modernized capabilities.

The port now includes advanced container lifts and loading equipment, boosting the port’s capacity from 550,000 TEU to 1 million TEU annually. The port can now accommodate larger ships, thanks to a deepened water depth of 10.4 metres, as announced during the event.

HE Peng Po Nea, Minister of Public Works and Transport, shared that the newly equipped terminal features cutting-edge container lifts, including two Edge QC units and six RGT container loading units.

The upgrade is part of a larger effort to modernize Sihanoukville’s infrastructure to meet rising container traffic and global shipping demands.

PM Hun Manet underscored that the new terminal will further enhance Sihanoukville’s strategic importance by enabling greater container traffic and meeting future logistics demands in the region.

Construction of the port began on 1 May 2023, with a total investment of USD 37.5 million. The Japanese government provided USD 10 million through concessional loans, while the remaining USD 27.5 million came from Sihanoukville Autonomous Port’s budget. Completion of the project was achieved in August 2024, delivering critical infrastructure to support Cambodia’s growing trade links. (Read more)
