Over 16,000 km of roads rebuilt by 2018 says Transport Minister

By the end of 2018, a total of more than 16,000 kilometres of national and provincial roads have been restored and rebuilt, according to the Minister of Public Works and Transport.

H.E. Sun Chanthol provided the statistics while reading the achievement report to Deputy Prime Minister Samdech Sar Kheng at the inauguration ceremony of five bridges in Battambang Province on 14 August. (Read More)

“As of the end of 2018, the ministry has achieved plenty of infrastructure works including the construction and restoration of national and provincial roads totaling 16,292 kilometres. 8,620 kilometres of which have already been upgraded to concrete and asphalt, which accounts for 53 percent of the total,” said H.E. Sun Chantol.

Regarding the progress of upgrading, national roads Type I is now 100% complete while Type II and provincial road are 72.3% and 30.4% respectively.

“In addition, we have so far expanded a total of 157 kilometres of national roads to four lanes, and another of 431 kilometres more is still under construction. Besides, we [Ministry] also completed the construction of 17 major bridges nationwide, which is a total of 16,067 metres long,” said H.E. Sun Chantol.

According to the minister, these achievements are part of the government’s strategic masterplan to fully integrate connectivity nationwide.
