Australia & Cambodia Unveil Advanced Food Quality Testing Service to Boost Agro-Food Safety

Australia, in collaboration with the Institut Pasteur du Cambodge, has officially launched a cutting-edge food quality testing laboratory in Cambodia, aiming to enhance food safety and market competitiveness for the country’s agro-food sector, according to a press release from the Australian Embassy on 16 October 2024.

The new facility, which adheres to ISO standards for pesticide and heavy metal analysis, will provide accredited testing services as part of the Cambodia-Australia Partnership for Sustainable Economic Development (CAPRED) program. This strategic initiative aims to improve the quality of local food products, protect consumers, and expand market access for Cambodian agricultural exports.

The laboratory addresses significant challenges for Cambodia’s agricultural businesses, as approximately 70% face difficulties securing certification due to the lack of internationally recognized testing services within the country. By offering reliable and standardized analysis, the new facility aims to bolster the domestic market’s credibility and create new job opportunities, driving sustainable economic growth.

Professor André Spiegel, Director of the Institut Pasteur du Cambodge, stated, “This new laboratory service will enable the Institut Pasteur du Cambodge to provide reliable testing services for Cambodia’s agro-food sector. This laboratory service will promote food safety and contribute to the country’s sustainable development by increasing trade opportunities.”

The CAPRED initiative is pivotal in advancing Cambodia’s position in the global agro-food market, laying the foundation for future growth through improved food safety standards and consumer protection.
