Australia to Showcase World’s Tallest Vertical Garden

The US$2-billion Southbank by Beulah Tower in Melbourne, Australia will soon become the tallest vertical garden in the world after completion.

According to Architecture & Design’s report, the project is developed by Beulah and designed by UNStudio and Cox Architecture.

On track to become Australia’s tallest tower at 365 metres high, Southbank by Beulah will be covered by vertical gardens over a space of 5.5 kilometres, which is 1.5 times the size of Melbourne Botanic Gardens’ Tan running track.

The tower will also feature pocket parks mimicking scaled-down neighbourhood parks, which connect neighbourhoods vertically within the residential tower. Besides, the ground floor will be also surrounded by extensive greenery.

All the different type of gardens will bring the total landscaped areas of the tower to 15,500 sqm. Moreover, all plants will be carefully selected and placed in correct conditions (sunlight, wind and elevation) to promote their sustainable growth.

Another special feature of the building is an innovative and eco-conscious irrigation system, whereby water collected on the building terraces will be stored underground for reuse as irrigation.

“We know that the inclusion of greenery, water, light and other natural elements within a built environment positively affects how people interact with space and how they feel in the space, both mentally and physically,” Beulah executive director Adelene Teh told the Architecture & Design.

The project was approved in April 2020 and is expected to begin construction this year.
