Cambodia Seeks Vietnam’s facilitation in Power Line Connection from Laos to Singapore

PM Hun Sen of Cambodia urged PM Pham Minh Chinh of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to collaborate in facilitating the connection of power lines from Laos for electricity transmission to Singapore. The request was made during a bilateral meeting at the 42nd ASEAN Summit held in Labuan Bajo, Republic of Indonesia, on 9th May 2023.

In the meeting, PM Hun Sen expressed Cambodia’s intention to purchase electricity from Laos and subsequently sell it to Singapore. He highlighted the significance of successful submarine transmission lines, which necessitate the geographical involvement of South Vietnam, the Kamao region, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Furthermore, PM Hun Sen appealed to his Vietnamese counterpart to facilitate this endeavor, stating that Cambodia has already prepared the necessary documentation for Vietnamese institutions.

In response, the PM of Vietnam acknowledged the information and committed to forwarding it to a designated working group for further review.

Notably, Royal Group Power Co., Ltd, under the leadership of Duke Kith Meng, has previously signed an agreement with Kappel Energy Pte Ltd for the sale and export of renewable energy through a submarine cable network connecting Cambodia to Singapore.  (Read more)
