Unveiling the Hidden Gem: Koh Ker Awaits World Heritage Recognition

Anticipation grows in Cambodia as the extraordinary archaeological site of Koh Ker stands on the brink of securing a coveted spot on the Fourth World Heritage List. Following the successful conclusion of the 37th ICC-Angkor and Sambo Prei Kuk Technical Meetings, Mr. Long Kosal, spokesperson for the APSARA Authority, shared his optimism with RFI on 12 June 2023.

The International Committee for the Coordination of the Protection and Development of the Angkor Historical Site (ICC-Angkor) and Sambor Prei Kuk collectively acknowledge the tremendous progress made by Cambodia over the past three decades, solidifying its position as a strong guardian of cultural heritage.

Highlighting the significance of this development, Mr. Kosal revealed that Cambodia eagerly awaits positive news from the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which is expected to proclaim Koh Ker as a distinguished member of the World Heritage family—the fourth cultural gem of Cambodia.

Nestled within the lush Cambodian landscape, Koh Ker holds an awe-inspiring wealth of ancient treasures. Its majestic temples, including the iconic Prasat Thom pyramid, evoke a sense of grandeur and mystery. With its potential inscription on the World Heritage List, Koh Ker is poised to captivate the world with its rich historical and architectural wonders, shining a spotlight on Cambodia’s enduring legacy.
