Cambodia, Japan Officially Sign Construction Contract for Choeung Ek Wastewater Treatment Plant

The Phnom Penh Department of Public Works and Transport (DPWT) and Kubota Metawater Joint Venture officially signed a construction contract on Tuesday 20 April for a large-scale wastewater treatment plant at Choeung Ek Lake in the southern part of Phnom Penh. Construction is expected to begin by the end of the month.

The signing ceremony came after Japanese private firm Kubota Metawater Joint Venture won the tender to build the project earlier this month. (Read more)

With the capacity to treat up to 5,000 cubic metres/day of wastewater, this plant is one of Phnom Penh’s largest wastewater treatment facilities. The project will be constructed on over 3 hectares of land in the Choeung Ek area using a US$27 million budget funded by the Japanese government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The grant agreement was signed in November 2019. According to the initial plan, construction should have already begun in late 2020 but was postponed to April 2021 due to the delay in impact resettlement works. (Read more)

According to Department of Public Works and Transport Director Sam Piseth, this plant will be large enough to manage wastewater from big districts such as Chamkarmon, Khan 7 Makara, and Boeung Keng Kang.
