Cambodia, Laos to sign 2,400 MW power deal

Cambodia and Laos are to sign a power deal allowing Cambodia to import 2,400 MW from Laos, with the Council of Ministers scheduled to discuss the details of the deal on 11 September.

The deal is scheduled to be signed next week during the official visit of Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisolith to Cambodia.

Victor Jona, director-general of Energy at Ministry of Mines and Energy, said on 9 September that Cambodia and Laos have discussed the deal and Cambodia is planning to a build high voltage transmission system – national grid – from the border of Laos to Phnom Penh.

Under the agreement, the power imported from Laos will be generated from a coal-fired power plant, Mr Jona said.

“The power agreement will be signed next week…and we plan to build a 500-kilovolt high voltage transmission line from Laos to Stung Treng province, and to Phnom Penh, to carry power from Laos,” Mr Jona said.

The power deal was unveiled after the two sides a held bilateral meeting on the sidelines of a meeting of ASEAN Energy Ministers held last week in Bangkok, Thailand.

According to Phay Siphan, a spokesman at the Council of the Ministers, the power deal generated by the coal-fired power plant imported from Laos will be discussed for approval in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Hun Sen on 11 September.
