Cambodia Strengthens Irrigation Systems to Boost Agricultural Productivity

In a recent press conference held on 2 March 2025, HE Tho Jetha, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, announced that Cambodia is home to an impressive 2,352 irrigation systems, which collectively have the capacity to irrigate nearly 2 million hectares of agricultural land across the nation.

Highlighting the significance of water resources for the national economy and the livelihoods of citizens, Minister Jetha detailed that out of the total irrigation systems, there are 56 large-scale systems, 1,166 medium-scale systems, and 1,122 small-scale systems, alongside eight large reservoirs. He emphasised that the government has successfully increased the irrigation capacity to 1,969,843 hectares.

Minister Jetha reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing the irrigation sector by prioritising the construction of both large and small reservoirs, repairing and modernising existing systems, and developing new irrigation projects to ensure comprehensive water security for communities throughout Cambodia.

In related news, on 17 February 2025, Prime Minister Samdech Thibhatei Hun Manet announced a significant investment of USD 60 million aimed at enhancing water infrastructure, specifically targeting five provinces.
