Cambodia and Thailand discussed on Thursday on energy cooperation as Thailand have surplus energy generation and Cambodia is in need to increase power.

According to Bangkok Post reported today, the discussion meeting was held between Ministry of Mines and Energy led by H.E. Suy Sem and his Thai counterpart Sontirat Sontijirawong in Bangkok in the sidelines of the meeting of ASEAN Energy Ministers.

Cambodia’s economy is growing with increasing demand for electricity, Thailand has surplus electricity generation, Mr Sontirat Sontijirawong said.

The countries will have to discuss measures to respond to each other’s needs, Mr Sontirat said, adding Cambodia has plans to expand its electricity production capacity in Thailand and Thailand is ready for joint investment.

Thailand is one of the three countries –Laos and Vietnam that Cambodia imports energy into the country.

In March, Cambodia asked Thailand to increase energy export to Cambodia from 120 MW to 200 MW.

According to the discussion, Thailand will export an additional 70 MW to Cambodia by December 2019.

Coal-fired power plant project with 2,000 MW located in Koh Kong province which was initially proposed in 2008 may be on the agenda of the meeting.
