Cambodian Government Invests USD40 Million to Stabilize Rice Prices During Harvest Season

In a decisive move to address the challenges posed by falling rice prices, the Cambodian government has allocated an additional USD40 million as part of the Royal Government’s Special Financing Program. This initiative aims to support rice procurement during the critical harvest season.

According to a recent press release from the Agricultural and Rural Development Bank (ARDB), the government is responding to a concerning trend in rice prices amid the ongoing harvest period. With international rice prices also declining—partly due to the consumption of food security stocks by several countries—demand on the global market is weakening even as rice production continues to rise both domestically and worldwide.

The ARDB emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring stable rice prices and protecting farmers’ livelihoods. To this end, a series of intervention measures have been implemented. These measures include providing loans as revolving capital to rice mills that collaborate with ARDB and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, allowing them to procure rice directly from farmers at fair prices.

The release of these funds is strategically timed to stabilize rice prices throughout the harvest season, extending from November 2025 into early 2026. This initiative falls under the Royal Government’s broader financing program, which aims to promote agricultural products, secure market access, and maintain stable agricultural prices. By facilitating loans to partner rice mills, the government aims to maximize rice procurement from farmers, ensuring they receive fair compensation for their efforts.

As Cambodia navigates these challenging economic conditions, this initiative highlights the government’s proactive approach to supporting its agricultural sector and safeguarding the livelihoods of its farmers.
