CAPFISH Project Boosts Cambodian Fisheries Sector

The CAPFISH-Capture project, aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of the fisheries sector in Cambodia, has officially concluded its operations. The closing ceremony was attended by officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, along with representatives from the European Union, marking a significant milestone in the initiative’s efforts to strengthen local businesses.

H.E. Has Sareth, Secretary of State for the Ministry of Agriculture, commended the successful collaboration among the Fisheries Administration, UNIDO, and various development partners. This partnership has been instrumental in the growth of fisheries processing enterprises, impacting over 64 businesses and more than 500 partners within the fisheries value chain.

The project has been particularly notable for its implementation of the Value Chain Investment Support (VCIS) program, which provided over USD 2 million in funding, complemented by an additional USD 4 million in capital generated from participating enterprises and financial institutions. This investment focused on modernizing equipment and enhancing post-harvest processing facilities, ultimately improving operational efficiency within the sector.

During the ceremony, the Ministry of Agriculture urged all stakeholders in the fisheries value chain, particularly in the private sector, to continue collaborating with relevant authorities. This cooperation is vital to achieving the objectives of the 2022-2030 Agricultural Development Policy, which emphasizes the importance of boosting local production and improving export capabilities.

The successful completion of the CAPFISH-Capture project underscores a pivotal moment for Cambodia’s fisheries industry, setting the stage for future growth and sustainability.
