China to Build Underwater High-speed Rail Line

In a bid to boost tourism and trade, China is to build its first underwater high-speed rail line connecting Shanghai to Zhoushan, according to CNN.

According to the same source, the Chinese government gave the green light for the 77-kilometre long underwater high-speed rail line project in November.

As claimed by CNN, this new rail line will feature construction of new track of up to 70.92 kilometres including the undersea section of up to 16.2 kilometres with construction expected to begin in 2019 and finish by 2025. Moreover, there will be four new stations in addition to the three existing stations which will be redeveloped.

This underwater high-speed rail line will connect Ningbo or Yong of Shanghai to Zhoushan with a speed of up to 250 kilometres per hour which would translate into an 18-minute traveling time for the 77- kilometre journey.

This stunning project costing about US$3.6 billion will make travelling to the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, the world busiest port for cargo, a much easier journey.
