China Unveils Strategic High-Speed Railway Link to Vietnam, Boosting ASEAN Trade Ties

In a significant move to deepen economic ties with Southeast Asian nations, China has inaugurated the Fangdong Railway, the first high-speed railway connecting a Chinese city on the Vietnam border to the national network. The 47km Fangdong Railway, running between Fangchenggang and Dongxing, emerges as a pivotal infrastructure project, symbolising Beijing’s commitment to fostering trade and investment cooperation with its Southeast Asian neighbours according to SCMP news on 27 December 2023.

Fangchenggang, boasting the largest seaport in western China, serves as a vital gateway to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The railway, with a maximum speed of 200km/h, serves both passenger and freight transportation, offering not only efficient logistics but also reducing travel time between Fangchenggang and Dongxing from one hour to a mere 19 minutes.

This new railway is of great significance for facilitating travel, boosting border tourism, economic and trade exchanges, and promoting infrastructure connectivity for the Belt and Road Initiative,” noted officials from the Nanning branch of the China State Railway Group.

Overcoming geological and environmental challenges during its four-year construction, the Fangdong Railway underscores China’s commitment to enhancing cross-border connectivity. The project aligns with broader regional collaboration as evidenced by the recent joint statement during President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Hanoi, where closer cooperation on cross-border rail development was announced.

China’s focused efforts on infrastructure development around the Beibu Gulf aim to fortify trade and logistics links, connecting southwestern hinterland provinces with the ASEAN bloc. With exports to ASEAN surpassing US$473 billion and imports standing at US$352 billion in the first 11 months of the year, these strategic rail initiatives are poised to reshape the regional economic landscape.
