Phnom Penh & Battambang Set for Expansion of Pedestrian Streets Following Successful Trial

In a significant move to enhance urban mobility and promote pedestrian-friendly environments, the Cambodian government is gearing up to construct additional pedestrian streets in both Phnom Penh and Battambang. This initiative follows the successful trial of pedestrian streets in Phnom Penh, which has garnered widespread public support.

During a recent meeting held on 11 February 2025, officials from the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction discussed plans for future pedestrian developments. The General Department of Land Management and Urban Planning consulted with the Visakha Football Club on a proposal to create a park, a parking lot, and a new 193-metre pedestrian street near the football stadium in Borey Grand Phnom Penh, Sen Sok district.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior HE Sar Sokha addressed the Battambang Provincial Administration on 7 February 2025, encouraging the identification of appropriate locations within Battambang City to establish a pedestrian street. This initiative aims to emulate the successful activation of a pedestrian zone in Phnom Penh, which has been attracting crowds every Saturday and Sunday evening.

“The introduction of pedestrian streets provides more options for our citizens, both residents and visitors, complementing existing attractions such as the Stung Sangke area, Independence Monument Park, and Samdech Kralahom Park,” the minister stated during the meeting.

The Phnom Penh Administration has initiated a trial pedestrian street, dubbed Walk Street, along Sisowath Avenue. This vibrant pedestrian zone stretches from Paschi Chamkorn Street (Street 94) to the Royal Palace in the Daun Penh district and officially opened on 1 February 2025. With each passing week, the initiative is witnessing increasing support from both locals and tourists, transforming the avenue into a bustling hub of activity. (Read more)

As the state advances its urban planning efforts, anticipation grows for the positive impacts these pedestrian streets will bring to the cultural and social fabric of Phnom Penh and Battambang.
