Chinese Firm Finishes Phnom Penh-Bavet Railway Feasibility Study

The assigned Chinese firm has recently finished the feasibility study of the railway project connecting Phnom Penh to the Vietnam border Bavet City, according to a senior official of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT).

Ministry spokesman HE Vasim Sorya said on 06 October that the railway project is part of the development of the economic corridor between Cambodia and Vietnam, which will help facilitate transportation, boost economic activities, and tourism.

“The minister [HE Sun Chanthol] has granted rights to a Chinese company to conduct the study, and the study has been seemingly finished, but we have not seen the report yet and there is no public meeting yet regarding the result,” HE Sorya said.

The spokesman did not reveal the Chinese company’s name that received the green light to study the project yet, but he said it is a different firm assigned for the Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway project.

“We just want to know which points the rail line will pass through and what the economic benefits are. After we see the results in detail, we will make a decision later whether the project will be BOT [build-operate-transfer] or state-owned,” said HE Sorya.

According to him, many firms have done many studies regarding this project since 2000, including Malaysia, South Korea, and China. However, the government has yet to finalise any of them.

Meanwhile, for the Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway project, the assigned firm China Railway International Group Co., Ltd, concluded the study with three designs last month. However, the government has yet to choose any of them, saying the ministry needs further consideration. (Read more)
