Chinese company MIZUDA plans to invest in a waste-to-energy plant in Siem Reap capable of combusting 210,000 tons of rubbish per year into 12MW of electricity, according to a post of the Siem Reap Provincial Administration Facebook page on 21 July.

The project has been studied for more than half a year and was completed before December 2019. Upon completion, the plant will be able to generate up to 750,000 kilowatt-hours each year, which accounts for approximately 10% of the current supply in Siem Reap.

Siem Reap Governor H.E Tea Seyha expressed his full support for this investment project. However, regarding the garbage collection, pricing, energy sales, and plant construction location, the firm will study this further and discuss it again at the next meeting.

The amount of rubbish in Siem Reap is currently around 480 tons/day. According to estimates based on population and tourist growth, the number will increase to at least 600 tons/day by 2020 and 1,000 tons/day in 2035.
