Chinese-funded National Stadium Set to Finish Before 2020

Morodok Techo National Sports Complex

Construction of the multimillion dollar Cambodia national stadium funded by the Chinese government is set to finish before the 2020 schedule.

According to an in-depth interview with Chinese media outlet Xinhua Net, the USD170 million Morodok Techo National Sports Complex is going full swing ahead with major foundations already having been constructed.

Giant crawler cranes, the biggest cranes ever used in the country, capable of lifting up to 180 tons of steel structures have been installed as well as eight other tower cranes, two of which can be 115 metres tall.

The stadium, which will serve as a venue for the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in 2023, started construction in 2017 with an expectation to finish by 2020.

However, with the advanced technology and modern equipment as well as hard work from both Cambodian and Chinese constructors the project is being pushed to finish before schedule, according to Guo Liangliang, senior engineer at the China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), a contractor of the stadium.

“The work on the substructure of the 55,000-seat stadium is underway smoothly, as the drilling of more than 1,600 piles had been totally completed.” Mr Guo said.

In addition, the quality of the project is the main priority while a laboratory has been set up to ensure the concrete and steel are of high quality, he added.

Designed into a shape of sailing ship, the stadium is 35 metres tall with two prows, each 99 metres tall, and surrounded by an ancient Angkor-style moat and decorated with Rumdul, a Cambodia national flower. The stadium also serves as a great symbol for the longstanding friendship between Cambodia and China.
