Environment Ministry Drafts Kingdom’s First Green Building Guidelines

The Ministry of Environment (MoE) is currently drafting new guidelines to encourage, monitor, and recognise green constructions, which will become the first of their kind in Cambodia upon enforcement.

The drafting team are now studying the models from Germany’s green building system (DGNB) and Korean green building system (G-SEED) to ensure that the draft guidelines are complete and comprehensive.

According to a three-day workshop from 3-5 August organised by the National Council for Sustainable Development (NCSD), this new draft guideline is designed to promote the efficiency in a construction project from the design, construction, usage, to disposal stages.

Secretary-General of NCSD HE Vann Monyneth said the draft guidelines will also be made to align with the existing regulations such as building energy efficiency policy, construction regulations, and among others to ensure best practice in the Cambodian context.

He added that these guidelines will be the first of their kind in Cambodia.

“With green practice in mind, each construction will consume less water, use the land more effectively, use only environmental-friendly construction materials, reduce waste, and especially alleviate impact on the community during construction and building usage,” said HE Monyneth.
