FACT to Develop Two Projects as Community Tourism Destination around Tonle Sap Lake

Fisheries Action Coalition Team (FACT) has launched two new projects to promote the rights of local communities towards the sustainability of fisheries resources in the Tonle Sap Lake and to conserve biodiversity and climate change in the area. The organization aims to develop Kampong Thom, Kampong Chhnang, and Pursat provinces as a community tourism destination by building floating markets, bungalows, and centers that focus on biodiversity, cultural, and social aspects.

According to Mr. Yuk Senglong, Executive Director of FACT, the two projects has two components focusing on:

  1. Promote the rights of local communities towards the sustainability of fisheries resources in the Tonle Sap Lake and
  2. Conserve biodiversity and climate change in the Tonle Sap Lake.

The projects also focus on the conservation of squid in the former fishing lot 2 in Phat Sanday commune, Kampong Svay district, Kampong Thom province, covering an area of 921 hectares. The project will also help improve the livelihoods of fishermen by creating diverse business sources, including ecotourism services and processing of fishery products, and improving the management of plastic waste and recycling

The Tonle Sap Lake and along the Mekong River cover 30% of the country’s land area and are home to 73 protected areas, including three biodiversity corridors, which cover 7.2 million hectares or 41 sites. There are 23 protected areas in Cambodia that were established in 1993, 41 sites in 2016, and 73 sites in 2023.

The new projects by FACT will contribute to the sustainable development of the area and the improvement of the livelihoods of local communities.

The inauguration of the two projects was held on April 25, 2023, in Siem Reap, and it marks a new chapter in the efforts of FACT to promote the sustainable use of fishery resources and the conservation of biodiversity in Cambodia.
