Phnom Penh Monorail Feasibility Study Complete, Subway Option to Follow Next Month

The feasibility study of the monorail project has been completed, while the study of the subway option is scheduled to be completed in the next month, according to Public Works and Transport Minister Sun Chanthol this morning.

During the meeting with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), HE Sun Chanthol said that the ministry also requested the ADB to help review the results and develop strategies for those projects.

According to the initial plan, there are three options for mass transit systems in Phnom Penh including AGT, monorail, and subway. The AGT and monorail feasibilities have been completed, awaiting only the last one next month.

In the meantime, the government is actively seeking funds and hoping private companies will invest, which can be in the form of BOT or other investment structure depending on investors’ preferences.

After the study is completed, the ministry will take these options to report to Prime Minister Hun Sen to seek funds to develop the project. (Read more)

If built, either project will not only reduce traffic congestion but also enhance the image of Phnom Penh to a large extent, said HE Sun Chanthol.
