Progress Report on Romchek Irrigation System in Prey Veng Province

Significant strides have been made in the development of the Romchek irrigation system, which is now nearly 20% complete and poised to enhance agricultural productivity across the region. This comprehensive irrigation initiative is designed to serve a total area of nearly 2,000 hectares, ensuring both wet and dry rice fields receive the necessary water supply.

During a recent project inspection on 23 March 2025, led by Mr. Phang Vy, Director of the Department of Agricultural Irrigation at the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, technical experts assessed the progress of the Romchek Canal irrigation system. Mr. Vy highlighted that the system will effectively irrigate approximately 1,200 hectares of wet rice and nearly 500 hectares of dry rice, as well as a variety of mixed crops.

The ongoing construction and maintenance of the Romchek Canal involve crucial repairs, including the restoration of a 3,200-metre-long main canal, the renovation of 13 existing structures, and the construction of two new art structures to facilitate optimal water flow.

Mr. Phang Vy emphasized the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure the long-term quality and sustainability of the irrigation system. This cooperative effort is vital for maximising agricultural output and supporting local farmers.

In related news, the Ministry of Water Resources reports that Cambodia currently operates 2,352 irrigation systems, comprising 56 large-scale, 1,166 medium-scale, and 1,122 small-scale systems, along with eight large-scale reservoirs. The total irrigation capacity across the country has increased significantly, now standing at an impressive 1,969,843 hectares. (Read more)
