National Road 7 Expansion Project Nears Completion as Vital Economic Link Reaches 90% Finish

Accelerated construction on the Skun to Kampong Cham corridor aims for early delivery to boost regional trade and transport efficiency

The expansion and upgrade of National Road 7, a critical infrastructure project connecting the Skun area to Kampong Cham city, has reached nearly 90% completion as of March 2026. This significant milestone was highlighted by Prime Minister Hun Manet in an update on March 20, 2026, in which he noted the steady, efficient progress of construction work. Spanning 45.504 kilometers, the project is transforming the existing roadway into a modern four-lane thoroughfare to accommodate increasing traffic and facilitate heavy transport between these two major hubs in Kampong Cham province.

Work on this vital corridor has been accelerating, with construction teams working diligently to ensure the project is completed this year, potentially ahead of its original schedule. The smooth execution of the development reflects a broader effort to modernize the nation’s transport networks and remove bottlenecks that hinder movement.

Beyond its physical dimensions, National Road 7 serves as a strategic economic artery for Cambodia. By widening the connection from the Skun roundabout to the provincial capital of Kampong Cham, the upgraded road will significantly facilitate the movement of residents and the transportation of agricultural and agro-industrial products. This improved connectivity is expected to serve as a powerful catalyst for socio-economic development, lowering logistics costs and enhancing the efficiency of trade routes across the region.

Along with the project to expand and upgrade National Road No. 7 to four lanes (Skun-Kampong Cham), 45.504 kilometers long (PK00+000 – PK45+502.84), starting from Cheung Prey district, Kampong Cham province to Kampong Cham city, Kampong Cham province, was announced to open the construction site, expand and upgrade in January 2023 at a cost of $117 million under a concessional loan from the Chinese government.
