Funan Techo Canal Project Set to Begin Excavation in December

Cambodia’s landmark Funan Techo Canal Project is set to begin excavation work in early December 2025, marking a major milestone in the country’s infrastructure development. The announcement was made by H.E. Phon Rim, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, during a press briefing on October 22, 2025.

Preparatory work is currently underway, with teams actively addressing environmental and social impacts, particularly in Section 2, located in Koh Thom District, Kandal Province. According to H.E. Phon, the official start of digging will depend on water levels, with operations expected to commence once the waters recede—likely in late November or early December. The project is slated for completion by 2028.

“This historic project represents a pivotal step toward transforming Cambodia’s navigational and maritime capabilities,” said H.E. Phon. He emphasized that the Funan Techo Canal will strengthen the nation’s transportation independence and safety, while boosting both domestic and international trade efficiency.

Beyond improving connectivity between inland waterways and international seas, the canal is expected to significantly reduce transportation distances and costs. It will also stimulate agriculture, tourism, and logistics, aligning with Cambodia’s long-term vision of achieving upper-middle-income status by 2030.

Stretching 180 kilometers in length and 80 to 100 meters in width, the Funan Techo Canal was officially inaugurated by His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn on August 5, 2024. The canal will link the Takeo Canal of the Mekong River, cross the Bassac River in Koh Thom District, and extend to the sea off Kep Province, traversing Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep provinces.
