PM Announces Funan Techo Canal Project Set to Launch in August 2024

The Cambodian government has announced the commencement of the US$1.7 billion Funan Techo Canal project in August 2024. The announcement was made by PM Hun Manet during the inauguration of various achievements at the Cambodian Buddhist Cultural Centre on 30 May 2024.

“The construction of the Funan Techo canal will begin in August 2024,” stated the PM at the ceremony. “We do not let long nights and long dreams because we dream too much and want to stop dreaming until we do it.”

The new waterway project will span approximately 180km, starting from the Takeo Canal on the Mekong River, passing through the Ta Ek Canal on the Bassac River, then entering the Ta Hing Canal on the Bassac River, Koh Thom district, and continuing to the sea in Kep province. It will traverse four provinces: Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep.

This ambitious project aims to reduce the distance of inland waterway transport by over 69km, significantly lowering transportation costs. It will also establish commercial areas and logistics centres, develop several new satellite ports, and expand zones for agriculture, irrigation, aquaculture, and animal husbandry. The canal is expected to support the development of Cambodia’s Fourth Economic Pole, create jobs at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, Phnom Penh Autonomous Port, and other ports, promote urban development and urbanization, and stimulate real estate growth.
