Garment Factories in Cambodia Gear Up for Sustainability

Garment factories in Cambodia are now engaging in sustainable energy usage, to save energy, increase production efficiency, and respond to the consumer trend of demanding green clothing production.

Switch Garment, together with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC), kicked off a series of energy audits in August which will take place in garment factories across Cambodia, according to a press release issued on Tuesday 24 August.

The Switch Garment energy audits will analyse the energy intensity of garment manufacturers’ facilities and identify opportunities for cost savings and production optimization.

Under Switch Garment, the audits will serve to inform factories on clean energy investment andidentify factories’ training needs to strengthen sustainable energy practices.

Faced with pressures from international buyers to reduce environmental impacts, 30 factories have thus far signed up as partners in the Switch Garment program while 20 more will be recruited later this year, read the statement.

According to the World Bank, the global fashion industry is responsible for 10% of annual global carbon emissions. In Cambodia, the Global Green Growth Institute estimates that improved energy practices in garment production can reduce GHG emissions reductions from the sector by 17%.
