Government boosting establishment of more SEZs along border areas

The Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) is studying and seeking greater understanding on investment and trade to compile a mechanism to boost the establishment of more special economic zones (SEZ) along border areas, while drafts of a new law on investment and a new law on special economic zones has been completed.

CDC Secretariat General H.E. Sok Chandasophea said that boosting industrial development along border areas is part of the government’s vision which was laid out in the government-private forum held on 29 March 2019.

H.E. Sok Chandasophea said in a press release dated 05 September that to collect inputs for establishing the mechanism, the CDC has sought understanding on investment and trade activities at main hubs along the border, particularly in SEZs.

“The visits are aimed to promote the government’s vision in boosting industrial development along border areas and to understand the real situation of investment and trade activities in the border areas for compiling the mechanism to attract more investment” H.E. Sok Chandasophea said.

So far, the CDC’s working group led by H.E. Sok Chandasophea has made field visits to Poi Pet town and Bavet town to seek better understanding of the real investments and challenges raised by investors and local authorities.

The government recently announced that Mondulkiri province will be another hub for SEZs in the future, which will generate jobs for local people, and is part of the process of investment diversification. (Read more)
