Gov’t plans to upgrade all railway network to high-speed one

Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen intends to turn all railways in Cambodia into a high-speed system.

During the graduation ceremony at National Technical Training Institute on 27 February, PM Hun Sen said that Cambodia will soon leave a low-middle-income status, so Cambodia should push those projects as well as possible.

“Becoming a high-middle-income county, Cambodia will face higher interest rates when requesting loans. They will no longer lend us money on the principle of concessions, but they will lend us at interest rates on the principle of trade. Then Cambodia will lose access to favourable interest rates from development organizations,” said Samdech Hun Sen.

According to the Ministry of Public Works (MPWT), Cambodia currently has three railways, including Southwest Railway (Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville) with a total length of 266 km, Phnom Penh Railway Station – Phnom Penh International Airport with a total length of 10 km, and the northwestern railway (Phnom Penh-Poipet) with a total length of 386 km.
