Gov’t to build road connecting Phnom Penh city centre to SHV expressway

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) together with Phnom Penh Municipality plan to construct a priority express road, connecting from the centre of Phnom Penh to the starting point of the upcoming Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville expressway, according to MPPT Minister H.E Sun Chanthol.

H.E. Sun Chanthol made the announcement during a press conference on the progress and future direction of the MPWT at the Council of Ministers on 21 February.

According to H.E. Sun Chanthol, this priority route will be constructed to facilitate traffic for people travelling from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville via the expressway, without having to get stuck in traffic in the city before getting on the expressway.

“This project is at the expense of the municipality separately from us [ministry]. The ministry and the municipality have been discussing how to avoid overlapping with the future railway development,” said the minister.

Meanwhile, at this stage, construction of the US$2 billion Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville expressway is now 7.3% complete, as of December 2019. (Read more)
