HCMC-Moc Bai Expressway Construction to Begin in 2023, PP-Bavet Still Being Studied

Construction of the US$587-million HCMC- Moc Bai expressway is set to begin in 2023 and be completed in 2025, while the Phnom Penh to Bavet expressway on the Cambodia side is still undergoing a feasibility study.

According to the VN Express report yesterday, the authorities are trying to complete procedures and the feasibility study of HCMC- Moc Bai expressway this year. Meanwhile, compensations for land acquisition are expected to be completed next year.

The route is 53km long, running from Ring Road 3 in outer HCMC to National Highway 22 at the Moc Bai Border Gate by Cambodia.

Currently, Highway 22 is the only route connecting HCMC to border, which creates an excessive volume of traffic.

The same source noted that the HCMC- Moc Bai expressway will be built under a build-operate-transfer (BOT) model, with the government funding land compensation.

In November last year, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport’s spokesman HE Vasim Sorya said that the government is still considering and comparing the studies of the Phnom Penh-Bavet expressway project by both China and Japan. (Read more)

According to the spokesman, China Railway International Group Co., Ltd presented three designs for construction of this expressway in September. (Read more)

Some time ago, JICA also completed their study of the project. But due to the high cost of the project, the government sought an alternative.

If the expressway gets built on both sides of the border, the connectivity between the two counties will be hugely improved, resulting in better trade activities.
