Cambodia’s Tourism Industry Achieves Record-Breaking Revenue of over US$2 Billion in 2022

Cambodia’s tourism sector experienced an exceptional year in 2022, with revenue surpassing the US$2 billion mark. The Ministry of Tourism recently unveiled its official report during the Tourism Review Conference on June 21, 2023, showcasing the industry’s remarkable growth and economic impact.

According to the report, Cambodia welcomed approximately 2.28 million international tourists in 2022, representing a staggering increase of 1,058.6% compared to the previous year. Furthermore, the number of national tourists reached an impressive 13.93 million, marking a notable growth of 198.8%. Additionally, around 970,000 Cambodian travelers explored destinations abroad, marking a substantial surge of 3,079.5%.

In terms of revenue, international tourists contributed an astounding US$1.415 million, while domestic tourists generated approximately US$650 million, underscoring the industry’s substantial financial contribution to the country’s economy. The report also highlights that the revenue from tourism accounted for around 3.6% of Cambodia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), demonstrating the sector’s significant role in driving economic growth.

The report further reveals that the average length of stay for visitors was three days and two nights, with each national tourist spending an estimated US$50 on average. Moreover, the thriving tourism industry has played a pivotal role in job creation, employing approximately 320,000 individuals in various sectors throughout 2022.

Building on the positive momentum, Cambodia has continued to attract visitors, even amid global challenges. In the first five months of 2023, the country welcomed over 2.16 million international tourists, representing a remarkable increase of 1.059% compared to 2021 and surpassing pre-COVID-19 levels. Looking ahead, the Ministry of Tourism anticipates welcoming approximately 4.5 million international tourists and 16 million domestic tourists throughout 2023, further solidifying Cambodia’s position as a premier destination.

The remarkable achievements of Cambodia’s tourism industry in 2022 exemplify the country’s allure as a captivating travel destination. With its rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality, Cambodia continues to enchant visitors from around the world, fostering sustainable growth and economic prosperity.
