Japan & Korea Collaborate to Produce International Standard Bio-Energy from Cambodian Cashew Shells

Cambodia’s burgeoning cashew industry has received a game-changing boost as researchers from the prestigious Korea Energy Institute (KIER) and Japanese powerhouse Mitsubishi Corporation unite to harness the untapped potential of cashew shells, transforming them into eco-friendly bio-energy. This groundbreaking initiative comes in response to Cambodia’s rising prominence in cashew cultivation, opening new avenues for sustainable energy generation and income diversification.

The Cambodian Chamber of Commerce (CCC) convened a momentous meeting on 12 July 2023, where the esteemed Cambodian Cashew Association’s President conveyed the researchers’ cutting-edge technology introduction. By adeptly converting cashew shells into bio-energy, this state-of-the-art process not only mitigates the need for burning or discarding shells but also unlocks a new era of cashew nut processing in Cambodia, generating additional revenue streams.

Leveraging their technological expertise, Korean researchers attest to the impressive energy yield from cashew shells, driving eco-conscious practices and bolstering Cambodia’s position as a global sustainability leader. Moreover, the technology aligns with Mitsubishi Corporation’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions by refining low-carbon biofuels. With an annual demand for approximately 5,000 tons of cashew nuts, Mitsubishi’s investment stands as a testament to Cambodia’s rich cashew resources and immense growth potential.

Uon Silot, President of the Cambodian Cashew Association, commended Mitsubishi Corporation’s pioneering efforts, acknowledging that Cambodia’s cashew shells possess ample oil content, making them an ideal source for biofuel production. This strategic collaboration not only fosters economic prosperity but also paves the way for a greener future, minimising carbon dioxide emissions and ensuring responsible resource utilisation.

The Vice President of the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce, Oknha Lim Heng, extended a warm welcome to potential Korean and Japanese investors, urging them to explore investment opportunities in cashew processing and harnessing cashew shells in line with the Royal Government’s visionary policies.

Excitingly, a Singaporean company is currently in advanced negotiations to establish a semi-finished factory and production hub, with local enterprises poised to supply semi-finished products. This symbiotic partnership will enable the company to produce finished products for export, elevating Cambodia’s cashew industry to international standards.
