Japan to Provide Over US$10 million to Upgrade Vessel Traffic System at SHV Port

Japan will provide grant aid of approximately US$10.8 million to Cambodia to develop and enhance the vessel traffic system (VTS) at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, according to a press release dated 26 February 2021.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation HE Prak Sokhornn and Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia HE Mikami Masahiro signed the Exchange of Note on the Grant Aid on 01 March.

The aid will contribute to promoting the economic and social development of Cambodia and will further strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

Sihanoukville Autonomous Port has been continuously expanded and upgraded in recent years, with most projects funded by the Japanese government.

According to the 2020-2030 plan, the Sihanoukville seaport expansion project has a total of five phases. The first phase (expanding to 14.5m) design is complete and construction will soon begin. (Read more)

Upon completion in 2023, the port can accommodate large container vessels with a capacity of up to 60,000 tons, or 93% of the total number of vessels in the Asia-Pacific region.

In the meantime, the Cambodian government is also opening opportunities for development partners to study the second and third phases as well by expending the depth to 16 metres and 17.50 metres respectively. According to HE Sun Chanthol, JICA is also studying these phases. (Read more)

For the long term, the government will also expand the port to 18.5 and 19 metres in the fourth and fifth phases. (Read more)
