Svay Rieng Celebrates Completion of Phase 1: Kampong Chrey Irrigation Canal Project

The first phase of the Kampong Chrey Irrigation Canal project in Svay Rieng province was completed as announced by the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MWRM) on 4 June 2024. This milestone achievement marks a significant step forward in bolstering agricultural productivity in the region.

An inspection led by HE Ton Vanthara, Secretary of State of MWRM, verified the project’s progress and confirmed the 100% completion of Phase 1. The inspection team also emphasised the importance of expediting the state land registration process for the four designated pool areas: Daun Toi Reservoir, Thlak Kambot Reservoir, Svay Ya Reservoir, and Batu Reservoir. These reservoirs, located across Chantrea district, Kampong Ror district, and Bavet city, will play a critical role in water storage and irrigation management.

The inspection team further reviewed the ongoing construction of canals, dams, and the irrigation system within Kampong Chrey in Svay Thom and Chheu Teal communes in Svay Chrum district.

HE Ton Vanthara also directed the Svay Rieng Provincial Department of Water Resources and Meteorology to prepare a proposal for the project’s second phase. This next phase will focus on the rehabilitation of 5,291 metres of drainage canals and the construction of eight  “artistic structures” designed for storing irrigation water.

The successful completion of Phase 1 signifies the accomplishment of several key objectives.  This initial phase encompassed the rehabilitation of 550 metres of canals, the construction of 550 metres of delta dams, and the erection of two additional dams.  These improvements will contribute to enhanced water management and irrigation capabilities in the region.
