Kampot major deep seaport plans progress

The construction of a massive deep seaport project in Kampot province starts is progressing with the docking space and seaport entrance complete, according to Mr. Soy Sinol, Deputy of Kampot Tourism Department, at a press conference on “Progress and Continuing Direction of Kampot Provincial Administration” on 08 May 2020.

“This port is invested in by him [a private investor]. For the progress of the construction, I can’t evaluate by percentage right now because the size of this port is too big, but the docking space and the entrance to the port are already completed. The remaining tasks are those relating to some service provision areas and some government approvals,” he said.

“We discussed earlier that we want to finish the project by early 2020. However, I think after the COVID-19 situation becomes better, we will encourage the private sector to finalize the project,” he added.

The construction of the deep-water port is an important strategic infrastructure with the goal of connecting the region’s coastal shipping corridor, linking Vietnam’s Ha Tien to Thailand’s Trat province, through Kampot, Sihanoukville, and Koh Kong Province on National Road 48, according to Prime Minister Hun Sen’s speech at the inauguration of a Japanese-grant water supply system in Kampot on 02 April 2019.

The new deep-water seaport, a joint venture between China’s Guangxi Beibu Gulf International Port Group and the well-known Try Pheap Group from Cambodia, has the capacity to accommodate large vessels of up to 30,000 tons.

This new deep seaport is one of three major port projects in the southwest of Cambodia in addition to two other ports; Kep International Tourist Port, and the Koh Tansay port, which have been announced by the government. The Kampot deep seaport will be a major seaport besides Cambodia’s main seaport in Sihanoukville.
